If the recent SC Democratic Party Chairman’s race was divisive, the start of Trav Robertson’s administration is the perfect example of unification and hitting the ground running. Since his win, he has been seen frequently prowling the Statehouse grounds, in addition to meeting and talking with party leadership in counties across the state. Our sources report this is an immediate and drastic change from the prior administration whose focus was more centered on national politics and interest. Although the prior administration was effective in securing and implementing the strategy necessary to carry out the 2016 Presidential Primary, many saw the lack of attention to South Carolina races as a missed opportunity for local and state level races.
Our party sources tell us Robertson has had a laser focus on Statehouse and county level races for 2018. He also used his short time in office to focus on the current Special Elections in SC 5th Congressional District, and the two Statehouse Special Elections in District 70 and 84. One party activist told us, “he has been tenacious with organizing and building the support needed to win. This is a welcome change.”
Robertson has been especially active in the Special Election for House District 84. Democrats field a political newcomer, but one with a business following and work ethic that has caught the attention of party activist and leaders across the state. Working closely with House Democrats, the Robertson led party has built an excitement not witnessed since the 2010 Sheheen Gubernatorial Campaign.
We aren’t sure if his efforts will lead to new wins and pickups for SC Democrats, but we are certain his enthusiasm, passion, and work-motor; in addition to the recent trouble of a few GOP leaders and the failed leadership of those currently in office, will lead to a change in attitude among party leaders and activist. This change could ultimately lead to the public’s change of perspective when thinking of South Carolina Democrats.
We find Robertson’s refocus on winning in South Carolina to be a great indication for the future of SC Democrats. Robertson could ultimately end up being the transformational leader South Carolina Dems have been desperately seeking.
