After handily securing a victory in the Democratic primary held on Tuesday, May 15th, well known community activist and former Richland One school board member, Wendy Brawley is giving local Democrats a lot to look forward to in the future. With progressive ideals and an outspoken demeanor her presence will be felt on day one at the Statehouse.
Brawley garnered over 60% of the vote in her runoff against Heath Hill to become the Democratic candidate for South Carolina House District 70. House District 70, which is largely comprised of parts of Richland and Sumter County, will likely welcome Brawley with open arms. The seat was occupied by Joe Neal who passed away earlier this year and was regarded as the conscience of the House and an established progressive icon. Brawley received the endorsement of the Neal family and progressive powerhouse Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter.
Brawley will be a force to be reckoned with when she enters the House. She has a proven knack for connecting with the community and bringing their issues to the forefront and won’t mince words while doing it.
She is also no stranger to competition and certainly isn’t scared of going toe to toe with other lawmakers. She challenged incumbent Senator Darrell Jackson twice, in 2008 and 2016. Though she never carried more than 38% of the vote in those respective races, Brawley bolstered her name recognition, and proved she wasn’t scared to throw a punch even if the blow was directed at another respected and established politician.
Brawley will face Republican opponent Bill Strickland in the election slated to take place on June 20th.
