News that Rep. Justin Bamberg may be exploring a gubernatorial run in 2018 has sparked rumors across the state about the interest of other could-be democratic candidates who may consider (or be swayed into considering) a run in 2018.
One of the most compelling rumors to date involves State Senator Gerald Malloy–referred to as the “Lion of the Senate” by some operatives and insiders. PI has heard talk of an effort by party leaders, including the newly elected chair, to recruit the Darlington Senator to consider a gubernatorial run.
Senator Malloy is both a skilled lawmaker and lawyer, with friends and allies across the state and across the aisle. Some see his run as a way to divide the state and create a Pee-Dee and Low Country “firewall” capable of cutting off half of the state from GOP competitors.
Our sources say he could be in the process of forming a committee this month to explore a 2018 run. Malloy on the ballot would bring a seasoned policy maker with a reputation for being a no nonsense, straight-talker to the race.
According to one insider, “Malloy could represent what most thought Governor McMaster would be…a straight-talking, do what’s right regardless of party affiliation, deal making leader.” Some believe this combination could be powerful in a race that many now feel will be closer than once expected– kind like that Parnell effect. With the chaos within in the GOP party, both nationally and in the state, the timing could be just right for Malloy in 2018.
