In a 5-4 vote on Tuesday, the Mount Pleasant Town Council approved a new mask ordinance that will require all patrons and employees to wear a face covering while inside grocery stores, pharmacies, and other businesses.
Daniel Brownstein, Democratic candidate for House District 112, live-tweeted the council meeting and expressed his support for the passage of the ordinance.
“It’s been a long night. I am proud of the members of the Town Council who cut through the nonsense tonight and made a decision that is in the best interest of the health, safety and welfare of this community,” Brownstein wrote. “Leadership isn’t always easy but it is always worthwhile.”
While the approval of a mask ordinance is a step forward for Mount Pleasant, there has been notable silence from Lowcountry Republicans surrounding the measure.
Joe Bustos, the Republican candidate running against Brownstein for House District 112, formerly served on the Mount Pleasant Town Council before being voted out in 2019. This makes his silence on the matter even stranger and further begs the question: where does the Republican candidate stand on COVID-19 safety precautions like the enforcement of face coverings?
Voters of District 112 may take comfort in knowing that at least one of their candidates is committed to stopping the spread of COVID-19, both in Mount Pleasant and across the state. Following the Council’s vote, Brownstein tweeted: “I will continue to push for state leadership on [COVID] so that our town and county councils aren’t put in the position of setting public health policy like they were tonight.”
