It’s official: James Smith has announced he’s running for governor.
The announcement came in the form of a tweet and link to a statement on his website which addresses the reasons he decided to run and his priorities for the campaign. Smith is committed to excellence in South Carolina public education, an energy plan that works for the long term, rebuilding infrastructure, and bringing transparency to government.
Smith is native of Columbia and has represented his hometown in the State House since 1997. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Smith has previously served as a JAG officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard, before stepping down in order to re-enlist as an Infantry Officer after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He served in Afghanistan on a 12 month long combat deployment.
As he explored a run for governor, Smith released a video highlighting his military experience, legislative record, and core values.
Smith states that he came back from Afghanistan with a renewed appreciation for governance and desire to work together to improve South Carolina. Smith is a qualified, articulate candidate and his years of experience in the State House will serve him well if elected Governor.
