Jen Gibson is running to lead Berkeley and Charleston counties forward. As the Democratic candidate for House District 99, Gibson is the right choice to replace the district’s outgoing representative, Nancy Mace.
Gibson, the daughter of a working class family, has lived in Mount Pleasant almost her entire life. She spent twenty years as a small business owner until she eventually entered the nonprofit sector where she now serves on multiple nonprofit boards and remains active in her Lowcountry community.
As a product of Charleston County public schools, Gibson has made education the cornerstone of her campaign with promises to “reform, restore, recognize, and rethink” the ways South Carolina invests in its students and teachers. Her education platform includes initiatives to increase teacher pay, better accommodate students with varying abilities, and reduce suspensions in public schools to create an environment that is more conducive to learning.
Beyond education, Gibson’s time in South Carolina has enabled her to see how disadvantaged communities are impacted by harmful development plans. For areas burdened by polluted air and water, high risk of flooding, and excessive traffic congestion, Gibson’s platform promotes the development of sustainable infrastructure to improve the quality of life for Lowcountry communities.
With a record of public service and a platform dedicated to tangible, progressive change, it is no surprise that Gibson has gained the endorsements of organizations like Planned Parenthood and state legislators like Rep. Mandy Powers Norrell, Rep. Wendell Gilliard, and Sen. Marlon Kimpson.
Having grown up in South Carolina, Gibson has experienced first-hand the issues that are most important to her neighbors. She’s watched as state leaders have disinvested from our public school system, polluted our resources, and allowed our infrastructure to decay — all while leaving the Lowcountry behind.
But now, voters in House District 99 have an opportunity to elect a leader who will fight for their interests and challenge the long-time status quo. Jen Gibson is the only choice on November 3rd for a healthier, safer, and more equal Lowcountry.
